Have you looked in the mirror recently and started to notice some wrinkles forming on your forehead and around your eyes? Or maybe you have some deep scars that you’ve always been wanting to get rid of? Cosmetic injections might be the way to go. But with so many popular variations of this aesthetic treatment, how do you know which to choose?

Martha Viera, MD at Martha Viera Dermatology offers Botox® and dermal fillers — two of the most popular procedure options — and wants you to know the differences between them so you can start to narrow down which one is best for you.

What is Botox?

Botox is a botulinum toxin injection that blocks nerve signals in order to keep your muscles from contracting. Most often it’s used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in different areas on your face.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers, or soft tissue fillers, are injections that add volume and fullness to your skin. The injections typically consist of hyaluronic acid or a similar substance. It has a gel consistency that helps it to mimic natural skin tissue. This procedure is most often used to treat scars or large wrinkles and to add symmetry to the face or fullness to the lips.

So what’s the right choice?
Both of these treatments are injections that can give your skin an overall fresh and rejuvenated appearance. However, the similarities end there. Botox and dermal fillers have different ingredients and different results. So how do you know which to choose?

Should you choose Botox?
If you’re looking to diminish the appearance of fine lines around your eyes or to get rid of those forehead wrinkles, then Botox is the right choice for you. This keeps your muscles from contracting when you make facial expressions like frowning or squinting, which is what causes fine lines and small wrinkles to form around your face.

After the injections are placed, your wrinkles will start to fade over time. They do need to be repeated about every three to four months.

Should you choose dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers can give your skin an overall fuller appearance. So if you have skin that is thinning with age or have deep recessed scars, fillers can help plump the desired areas back up. You can also get fillers for fuller lips or to fade acne scars. These injections last a little bit longer and, depending on which you get, can last anywhere from six months to two years.

Both of these procedures are viable options for cosmetic changes. However, which one you should get depends on the kind of results that you want.
