Botulinum toxin and Fillers Q&A

What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport®) is an injectable treatment for facial wrinkles and other issues. It’s a neuromodulator, so it works by temporarily disabling communications in targeted motor nerves so they can’t tell their corresponding muscles to flex. The key ingredient in Botox® and Dysport® that causes this reaction is called botulinum toxin.

Botox can treat:

Crow’s feet
Frown lines
Forehead lines
Chin dimpling
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

During your treatment consultation at Martha Viera Dermatology, your providers decide if Botox can help you reach any of your treatment goals.
What are fillers?
Fillers are not the same as Botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport®) but are in the same treatment category because they’re also injectable. Fillers can treat wrinkles, but not the same wrinkles as Botox. Instead, they target larger wrinkles and work by adding soft volume into the area.

Most fillers have a gel-like consistency that looks like natural tissue. Using fillers, your Martha Viera Dermatology provider can make these changes to your appearance:

Plumper lips
More symmetrical lips and face
Plumper cheeks
Added volume in the hands
Fewer recessed scars, including acne scars
Fewer facial lines and wrinkles

Martha Viera Dermatology plans your treatment strategy and performs the procedure with careful hands. Your providers make sure the results look natural after your injections and that they complement your natural facial contours.
Can I get Botulinum toxin and fillers at the same time?
Yes, you can get Botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport®) and fillers within the same treatment plan to refresh your appearance. You can also choose from a range of skin care products and services at Martha Viera Dermatology to improve your appearance.
How long do the results of Botulinum toxin and fillers last?
Because they’re such different products, Botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport®) and fillers do not produce the same duration of results. With Botulinum toxin, you can expect wrinkle reduction for up to four months after injections. Once your targeted motor nerves gain back their function, you can opt for another round of injections. You can get them repeatedly if you get consistent results and are happy with them.

For fillers, it depends on the exact product you use. Hyaluronic acid fillers, a popular choice, are soft and gel-like and offer results lasting around 12 months. Other fillers help build collagen and therefore last a little longer, often up to two years.

Just like Botulinum toxin (Botox® and Dysport®), you can get fillers repeatedly from Martha Viera Dermatology if you want to keep enjoying your results.
